Becoming a Lions Club of Sunshine Member
Lions are groups of service-minded men and women who are interested in improving their communities. We are young people, families and Baby Boomers alike. To become a Lion is to become an active volunteer, a member of a respected international organization, a leader in your community and a friend to people in need.
There are many reasons to become a member. As a Lion, you’ll:
- Help your community and gain valuable skills
- Make an impact on people’s lives – locally and internationally
- Learn to be a leader – and lead a respected organization
- Network with business people in your community and around the world
- Energize your life and have fun
You’ll grow personally and professionally. And you’ll know that what you do is worthwhile and appreciated.
What does it cost??
As a Lion you can spend as much time as you have available in participating in Lion activities, but as a minimum a Lions club member would be expected to attend every meeting (22 per year, usually 2 per month) and participate in club activities whenever possible. Further involvement may extend to other activities e.g. visiting other clubs, attending conventions, etc – but these are not compulsory.
Lions are justifiably proud that, unlike most charitable organisations, 100% of all funds raised are put back into the community – there is no deduction for administrative costs. However, like other organisations, Lions Clubs do have administrative costs e.g. mail, printing, insurance, etc. This is charged to the member, but we realise that our members are giving freely of their time and labour and strive to keep costs for members to a minimum. They are (as at 1/7/2011)
– Joining Fee – there is a one-off joining fee of $50
– Member dues – our current dues are $140 per year ($70 per half year).
To promote the social and fellowship aspect of Lions Club membership, each month we conduct a dinner on one of the two meeting nights. Yearly we hold 11 dinner meetings and partners are welcome (indeed encouraged) to attend. For most dinner meetings you purchase you own meal.
Member dues are payable at the start of a half year ($70). Dinner costs are paid on the night.
Part of being a Lion can involve social events, visiting other clubs and attending conventions (it is entirely up to you but you can have a lot of fun). This is in no way compulsory, however if you wish to participate, cost would possibly be involved (eg. dinner costs for meetings, accommodation & travel costs for conventions). Please ask if you want further info.
Membership is by invitation. If you’re interested in being invited to join an existing Lions club:
- Contact our club and express your interest.
- Ask if you can attend a meeting to learn more about the club and its service projects.
- At the meeting, ask about becoming a member.
